Viking culture, widely known for its fearsome warriors and brutal raids, had several surprising facets that reveal a more complex society. One striking aspect is their emphasis on hygiene. Contrary to the common portrayal of Vikings as unkempt, archaeological findings show they maintained a high standard of cleanliness. They regularly bathed, used grooming tools like combs, razors, and ear cleaners made from bone and wood, and even practiced rudimentary dental care. Evidence indicates that they employed toothpicks and brushes, and some had dental procedures to address infections.

Another surprising element of Viking culture is the relatively advanced status of women. Viking women had significant rights compared to their contemporaries. They could own property, initiate divorce, and inherit their husband’s estate if he died, which often placed them in a position of power within the household. Unmarried women also enjoyed a degree of independence, managing their own residences and legal affairs.

The Viking approach to infanticide is another shocking fact. Infants showing signs of weakness or illness were often abandoned or killed to maintain the community’s strength and resource allocation. This practice was driven by the harsh conditions and the high value placed on physical health and capability.

Additionally, the Viking economy was heavily dependent on slavery. Captives taken during raids were often sold into slavery, contributing significantly to Viking labor, especially in shipbuilding and other industries. Finally, the Vikings were notable explorers. They reached North America centuries before Columbus, establishing short-lived settlements in what is now Canada. This discovery, supported by archaeological evidence, underscores their remarkable navigational skills and adventurous spirit.
